Diane on the Scene!

Various stories about the ferry's sinking circulated the island prior to my leaving, but the one I heard that seemed to fit was that the ferry had provided a late night excursion for some plantanos trucks and as one was offloading, the platform gave way. I don't think it was so much the platform but the off balance of the ferry, due to the load of the trucks, the main cabin then started taking on water. As you can see by the photos the front end is under water up to the second level. This occurred Saturday the 14th, and as of the 17th the ferry remained underwater, local police standing guard and the crane standing by.

News Flash. The story even made the front page of today's La Prensa - see: www.laprensa.com.ni/regionales/regionales-20060119-03.html Click the link to read the story (spanish). And we've brought their photo to our blog!
